Acembex was founded in 1970 as a joint venture between Tate & Lyle International (UK) and RAR - Refinarias de Açúcar Reunidas, S.A.R.L. The RAR Group acquired 100% of the company at the beginning of the 1980s.
Providing logistics services and consultancy, Acembex is now an international trading company, maintaining a leading position as the largest Portuguese grain and grain derivatives operator, moving about 900 thousand tons of raw material for the food and feed industry through the ports of mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores. It is also a reference supplier of the main European pet food plants.
The concepts of Quality and Safety are fundamental and transversal to the whole Agrifood industry. In partnership with its customers and suppliers, Acembex develops control and traceability actions throughout the raw material supply chain to ensure strict control of the quality of the product.
Acembex’s activities conform to the “SMETA - Sedex Members Ethical Trade Best Practice Guidance”, a good practice manual which emphasises and reflects its sustainability policy. Acembex is also a member of various national and international organisations such as “GAFTA - The Grain and Feed Trade Association”. The company has successfully renewed the certification of its Quality Management System by “ISO 9001:2015”, and the Food Safety System under the “HACCP - Codex Alimentarius” as well as being a distributor of organic raw materials.
In response to the new consumption trends, in 2018 Acembex became certified and developed an activity in the trade of organic cereals for the agrifood industry.
